In this special edition of our CLS Speaker Series, we will be screening the documentary Signing Black in America, which teaches us about the unique dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) that developed within historically segregated African American Deaf communities. The film illustrates how Black ASL today conveys an identity andsense of belonging that mirrors spoken language varieties of the African American hearing community. The screening will be followed by a discussion facilitated by guest speaker Roxie Dummett, an ASL instructor at George Mason University with extensive knowledge of Black ASL. Please join us for this very special event.
