Teresa Girolamo (University of Kansas) – Perspectives on Language-based Science from Community-based Autism Research

Perspectives on Language-based Science from Community-based Autism Research

Teresa Girolamo, M.S., is a Ph.D. candidate in child language at the University of Kansas. Her talk “Perspectives on language-based science from community-based autism research” will discuss a community-based approach to recruit and retain minority young adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum in language research. This community-based approach shifted the burden of participation in research from participants to the researcher and initiated contact with potential participants themselves, versus their caregivers. Overall, this approach was effective yet resource-intensive. Implications for language science, limitations, and future directions will be discussed.
