Documentary Screening: “Talking Black in America”

Documentary Screening: "Talking Black in America"

Dr. Walt Wolfram, William C. Friday Distinguished Professor at North Carolina State University and Executive Producer, joins us for a screening of his critically acclaimed documentary.

Join us for a Penn State screening and discussion of Talking Black in America, a critically acclaimed documentary about African American language.

Speech varieties from the African American community reflect the imprint of African language systems, the influences of regional British and Southern American dialects, and the creativity and resilience of people living through oppression. Filmed across the United States, Talking Black in America is a startling revelation of language as legacy, identity and triumph over adversity.

A Q & A session with Dr. Timeka Tounsel, Postdoctoral Scholar at Penn State and Dr. Wolfram will follow. This event is free and open to the public. More information about this project can be found at talkingblackinamerica.org.
